In November 1985, nearly twenty years ago, Hurricane Kate passed over Tallahassee and caused quite a bit of damage to my hometown. After a little research I discovered that Kate was only a category 3 storm at its worst and it was barely a hurricane at all when it made landfall. Even though it was such a weak storm I was out of school (first grade, I was six years old) for a week and we didn’t have power at the house for three days. I can only imagine what Hurricane Katrina would have done. Seeing pictures of New Orleans is scary and I’m very glad the category 5 storm missed Tallahassee for my family’s sake. That means that all of the trees in their yard are still standing, unlike when Kate came through. My dad took a picture of all the neighborhood kids sitting on our fallen tree after the hurricane. That’s another picture I need to look for the next time I’m in Tallahassee.

| You Passed the US Citizenship Test | Congratulations - you got 9 out of 10 correct! |
P.S. I missed the stupidest question. I went back and figured out which one it was, but I still posted my original score here. At least I'm honest.

I keep trying to think of something to write about, but I have been unsuccessful so far. I have several things I would like to write about, but for the sake of discretion I'll keep them to myself. I guess my life just isn't very exciting. I read lots of books and watch too much TV. Work has been very stressful. Last week was very busy and this week promises to be more of the same. I don't go to the gym nearly as often as I should. That has a little to do with work, but more to do with laziness. So my first goal for the week is to post something interesting everyday. I'm hoping it will motivate me to actually be more interesting. Today is probably the exception to the goal since this is the post and it's not exactly interesting. Be on the lookout for better stuff starting tomorrow.

I tried to buy a Coke out of the machine at work today and it ate my money. If it had happened sooner in the day I could have gotten a refund, but the cafeteria closes at 1:30 PM. So I tried to get a Pepsi out of the other machine, but when I pressed the “Pepsi” button a Diet Pepsi came out instead. Someone is trying to tell me something. I know I had a big lunch, but that shouldn’t preclude me from drinking regular soda. I hate diet soda, but I drank the Diet Pepsi anyway because I was really thirsty. It wasn’t too bad. I still resent the fact that the soda machines would only give me a diet drink, if anything at all.

If the rolling blackouts are any indication, it's officially summer in Los Angeles. Fortunately I still have power. And according to the Southern California Edison website I will probably not have an outage. Since I don't have an air conditioner, and only my TV and computer are on, I'm not much of a drain on the power grid. I love living near the beach.

When I was in high school low rise jeans were on the verge of becoming popular. But at that time, at least in the South, we called them hip huggers. I had my first pair when I was a senior and I thought they were a bit strange, but cool. Unfortunately they were also a bit short and Tom McCaleb called them flood pants. That made me self-conscious so I didn’t wear them very often. Little did I know that it wouldn’t be long before all of my jeans (and other pants too) would be low rise. Plus, they would have come in handy that day we wrote Mu Alpha Theta on our stomachs with a red marker (one or two letters per stomach, I was TH) and took a picture for the club calendar. The ink got all over my shirt and pants. I can’t remember all of the people who were in the picture, but I do remember that my friend Angela and I wished we had worn hip huggers that day. I’ll have to find the calendar next time I’m in Tallahassee. The biggest reason for telling this little tale is as a segway into mentioning that I love my new (low rise) corduroy pants. The other reason is that it makes me laugh. I guess that’s the best reason.

I finally bought the Old Navy corduroy pants I’ve been wanting. I really wanted some forest green ones, but they didn’t have any size 4 pairs in stock. So I got two different khaki colors that will be good for work as well as everyday wear. And they were on sale! Since they were so cheap I’ll have to go to another store and look for the green ones.

I just bought something really fun online. I just hope I get to use it someday.
In other news, I worked 11 and a half hours today. I had another review of my document and it was very painful. Bummer. And it caused me to miss aerobics. Double bummer. Tomorrow will be better.

Yesterday I discovered that Tower Records was also sold out of the Muppet Show DVD. I was so annoyed that this morning I ordered it from Amazon, and I was pleased to discover that it was actually cheaper than buying it on sale at either Best Buy or Tower Records. And it had free shipping. Cool. I really shouldn’t buy any more DVDs for awhile, but I have heard that there’s going to be a new Mystery Science Theater 3000 collection released this fall. Plus, there will be a new Hilary Duff CD available on Tuesday. And a new book I want to buy a week after that. I am poor for some of the silliest reasons. Books, movies, and music are my undoings.

I am so tired. I fell asleep watching TV earlier this afternoon and now I need caffeine just to get ready for bed. Thank goodness for Coke Zero. I haven’t slept well all week so I’ve become addicted to regular soda for breakfast. It’s the only way I was able to stay awake at work. Totally ridiculous. I need to work on reducing the amount of soda I drink again, as well as getting more sleep. I’ll think of these as my “end of the year” resolutions.
Speaking of resolutions, I tried to buy The Muppet Show Season One DVD at Best Buy yesterday but they were sold out. After purchasing four new tires for my car on Wednesday it’s probably good that I didn’t spend any more money. I’ve been doing a good job with my finances recently and I need to keep up the good work. The $350 I gave to Sears for the tires isn’t helping, but it was necessary. DVDs aren’t necessary, but I’ll probably buy the Muppet Show next week anyway if I can find it. It will only be the second DVD I’ve bought this year and that’s pretty good.

I bought a regular Diet Coke and a Diet Coke with Splenda at the grocery store today to see how they compared to Coke Zero. I haven't tried the regular kind yet, but the Diet Coke with Splenda doesn't taste too bad. It's palatable, but not nearly as good as Coke Zero. I'll let you know how the regular Diet Coke is when I taste it, but I'm pretty sure I'll remain loyal to Coke Zero.
P.S. I posted a quote about Harry Potter 6 a little while ago, but I deleted it later when I realized it gave something about the book away. I don't know if any of my readers care about that, but I would hate to ruin the book for anyone who hasn't read it.

“There was very little in the world less interesting than watching other people get drunk.” A Scholar of Magics by Caroline Stevermer
Sometimes I wonder if I’m the only one who thinks so, so it was refreshing to see that at least one other person shares my point of view. Adding my own opinion to that sentiment, there is very little in the world less interesting than listening to other people talk about being drunk.
