Dan and I saw “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” last night. He really liked it, but I haven’t made up my mind yet. It was definitely a good movie, but I’m not sure the story was presented in the best possible way. The movie confused me most of the time and that’s hard to do considering I know the story inside and out. Two things I did like were the performances of Brendan Gleeson (probably related to me somehow) as Mad-Eye Moody and Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort. In my opinion, they portrayed their characters extremely well. Dan doesn’t agree with me as far as Voldemort goes. The movie stayed refreshingly true to the book except for one little hint that was added at the beginning. I have a feeling the director wanted to make something more obvious for the sake of the audience. When it was all over I felt a little disappointed. I guess the books with their details and exposition are just more satisfying than the movies, but that’s something I realized about movies a long time ago.

I haven't yet seen the movie, but I fully intend to. I'm catching up on the books (just finished #4), and the movies (gonna watch #3 soon). My theory is that big fans of written works (I imagine Lauren is a bit Harry Potter fan, given what I've read here previously) are rarely, if ever, satisfied by their transition to film. It just can't compare with the world you've built in your mind, and the level of detail the books provide. But people like Dan, who I imagine has read all of them, but only once, are more free to appreciate the movie just as a movie. He wouldn't compare it to the book as much, or have specific aspects that are really important to him.

Personally, I didn't have much of an opinion about the first two movies. (Lauren, what did you think of them?) Kevin, who loves the books and has read them all multiple times, hasn't liked any of the movies so far. I felt like the movies were acceptable - pretty "mechanical", actually, although I hear the third one is the most "interesting" so far. I guess we'll see.
